Solar eclipses are a special event in the sky. Picture the sun suddenly dimming, birds quieting down, and the air getting cooler. This happens when the moon moves between the Earth and the sun, briefly blocking the sun’s bright light.

For a long time, people have been fascinated by these cosmic events. Stories about fights in the sky and amazing scientific discoveries make eclipses exciting and make us want to learn more about how the sun, moon, and Earth work together.

The Moon’s orbit is a bit tilted, so most of the time, it passes above or below the sun and doesn’t cover it. But twice a year, everything lines up perfectly, and the moon’s shadow falls on a small area on Earth, causing a solar eclipse that leaves us in awe.

There are different kinds of eclipses based on how far the moon is from the Earth:
• Total: The moon completely covers the sun, showing the sun’s thin outer layer in a moment of darkness.
• Partial: The moon covers only part of the sun, making a cool crescent shape.
• Annular: The moon looks smaller and can’t fully hide the sun, creating a glowing “ring of fire” around the darkened moon.
